First and foremost, I would like to extend my warmest greetings to all ASEAN Chief of Armies especially to the Philippine Army as the host of the 18th ASEAN Armies Rifle Meet (AARM) 2008 and to all competitors.

Over the years, the degree of inter-dependency between nations in this region has increased many folds. The diversity of our armies could be harmonised with mutual understanding and multilateral activities conducted such as this meeting. Effective inter-operability amongst armies in this region would also act as confidence building measures for peace and stability of the region. A multilateral activity such as this manages to build a stronger cooperation and relationship between ASEAN armies.

AARM is one of the multilateral activity that could be a platform for officers and men of ASEAN countries to exchange knowledge and skills, which in turn would lead to the creation of a harmonious relation. It is not just a competition but it creates an avenue to further enhance the spirit of comradeship, mutual respect as well as strengthening the military cooperation among the ASEAN Armies

It is my hope that all competitors will participate professionally while at the same time display the highest military standard and most importantly could gain renewed camaraderie and fond memories. Finally, I wish that this meeting could be conducted successfully and to all competitors the best of luck. Thank you.
