Army Recognizes World-class Army Athletes

FORT BONIFACIO, Metro Manila – The Philippine Army awarded a plaque of recognition to its outstanding athletes composed of the Philippine Army Athletics Team and Army Mountain Bike Team during the flag raising ceremony here on Monday, June 18, 2018.

A plaque of recognition was given to Col Antonio John B Divinagracia, Director, Special Service Center for being adjudged as the Senior Champion during the National Invitational Open Athletics Championship held last 31 May 2018 to 04 June 2018 at Ilagan City, Isabela. The Philippine Army Athletics Team participated the competition and won a total of 26 Gold Medals, 13 Silver Medals and 15 Bronze Medals in the different track and field events competing against forty (40) other local and foreign teams.

Another plaque of recognition was also conferred to Pfc Richard Salaño for finishing 2nd among the more than 2,000 international high caliber runners in the 21-kilometer Jeju International Marathon in Jeju, South Korea on 27 May 2018. Pfc Solano also won the 2016 Marathon in Phuket, Thailand while finishing 3rd last year in Dannang, Vietnam.

On the other hand, the Philippine Army Cycling Team also received a plaque of recognition for dominating the historical race “1st Tour de Basilan” dubbed as 120- kilometer Bike for HOPE (Honest, Orderly and Peaceful Election) last 12 May 2018 at the Basilan Circumferential Road, Basilan Province. The Army bikers dominated the race as Pfc Cris Joven finished first among the participants and declared winner of the 25-34 years old category while Sgt Alvin Benosa, Sgt Reynaldo Navarro and Sgt Alfie Catalan won 1st, 2nd and 3rd place respectively in the 35-44 years old category.

“The victories of the Philippine Army Athletics and Army Cycling Team in the National Invitational Open Athletics Championship, 21-kilometer Jeju International Marathon and the 120-kilometer “Tour de Basilan” proved that the capabilities of our organization This success is just an affirmation that our soldiers are indeed dependable not only in protecting the people but also in preserving the pride of our nation,” Major Gen Robert M Arevalo, Vice Commander, Philippine Army, said in his message.

The Philippine Army recognizes the contributions of its athletes in uplifting the image of the Army as a source of national pride and in pursuit of its vision of becoming a world-class Army by 2028.#
