FORT BONIFACIO, Metro Manila– The Philippine Army hosted the Field Enhancement Leadership Program for officers taking up the Command and General Staff Course (CGSC) at the Armed Forces of the Philippines Education, Training and Doctrine Command, here today, Apr. 10, 2019.

The CGSC is the highest military education taken by AFP officers. Graduates of this course are eligible to occupy key command and staff positions in the operational and strategic levels of the organization. It is also offered to qualified AFP reserve officers and international military students.

The class is composed of 49 officers from the Philippine Army, 4 from the Philippine Air Force, 3 from the Philippine Navy, two Technical Administrative Service (TAS) officers and four reservists.

The Office of the Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations briefed the students about the current operational thrusts of the Army, followed by an open forum. The purpose of the program is for the students to gain and to widen their perspective on new information and management of the Major Services to synchronize actions for future joint operations.

Before the program, the class first paid a courtesy call to the Vice Commander of the Philippine Army, Maj. Gen. Rizaldo B. Limoso.

“There are strict qualifications for the [battalion commander] post. It requires multiple capabilities such as determination, decisiveness, and willingness to take risks, strategic thinking, resource management, and creative planning. While all officers aspire for the position and already have the credentials and capability, only the most qualified will be given the chance to lead a battalion,” said Maj. Gen. Jesus B. Sarsagat, Chief of Staff, Philippine Army.

The delegation was headed by Col. Augusto Gaite, the Commandant of the Command and General Staff College who commended the performance of the students during their whole course.

Last week, the class also finished their foreign academic travel. They were divided into three groups and went to Korea, Malaysia, and Thailand, respectively. Through the program, the students were able to exchange information with the armed forces of other nations.#
