FORT BONIFACIO, Metro Manila – The Philippine Army continues its rehabilitation and relief efforts in communities devastated by Typhoon “Odette,” the strongest and most destructive tropical cyclone to hit the country this year.
The 8th Infantry Division deployed carpentry teams to help residents build back their homes damaged by “Odette” in the towns of Bontoc and Sogod in Southern Leyte. 8ID troops are likewise continuing clearing efforts on roads and pathways to improve access and mobility of people in Maasin City, Southern Leyte. Army engineers also conducted clearing efforts in landslide-hit roads in areas lashed by “Odette.”
Meanwhile, Philippine Army units nationwide are continuing relief efforts for typhoon-stricken communities in the Visayas and Mindanao two weeks after the onslaught of “Odette.”
The 6th Infantry Division deployed 100 personnel to deliver 19 truckloads of essential items for typhoon-stricken in Negros Occidental from December 22 to 30. The Headquarters Philippine Army also sent 21 truckloads of essential supplies worth P6.5 million to Southern Leyte and Surigao del Norte from Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City on December 30. Army troops also hauled and loaded 14 truckloads of relief goods worth P5 million onto the Cebu-bound BRP Tarlac of the Philippine Navy on December 29.
The 4th CMO Battalion delivered essential items to Dinagat Island on December 30. The said battalion likewise distributed food packs for families affected by Odette at Poblacion, San Francisco, Surigao del Norte on the same day.
“The Philippine Army will continue to support relief and rehabilitation efforts in typhoon-devastated areas,” Army Commanding General Lt. Gen. Romeo S. Brawner, Jr. said.
“As we usher in the New Year —the Philippine Army, together with national government agencies, local government units, and other partners —will continue to work ‘round the clock to help and give hope to our typhoon-stricken kabayans,” the CGPA remarked. #
