The Philippine Army is stepping up its rehabilitation efforts for typhoon-stricken families in Eastern Visayas.
The Army’s 8th Infantry Division have mobilized carpentry teams to help typhoon-stricken residents repair their homes damaged by “Odette,” the strongest and most destructive tropical cyclone to hit the country in 2021.
8ID deployed 11 carpentry teams to Maasan City, Southern Leyte to assist typhoon-stricken families. The Division likewise deployed carpentry teams to Matalom, San Ricardo, and Sogod towns and a platoon to help Limasawa Island folk.
It can be recalled that 8ID initially deployed last month 28 carpentry teams composed of 224 personnel to help rebuild damaged houses and construct temporary shelter for typhoon victims.
In addition to rehabilitation efforts, the Division has set-up free charging stations and wi-fi spots for residents after widespread power outages. Moreover, the division deployed very small aperture terminal (VSAT) communications equipment to Liloan town.
Meanwhile, 8ID Commander Maj. Gen. Edgardo De Leon, together with AFP Visayas Command Chief Lt. Gen. Robert Dauz, met DPWH Sec. Roger Mercado on Wednesday, January 5, to discuss damage assessment and construction of temporary shelter project per municipality and rehabilitation programs in calamity areas.
The Commanding General, Philippine Army (CGPA) Lt. Gen. Romeo S. Brawner, Jr. commended Army troops involved in rehabilitation efforts as he assured residents in calamity areas of the Army’s continued assistance.
“The Philippine Army time and again has proven its capability as a reliable partner of national government agencies and local government units in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) efforts. Rest assured, ‘Team Army’ will continue to exhaust all means to help our countrymen recover from the devastation left by Odette,” the CGPA remarked. #
