New Army Chess Grandmasters render call, receive award from CGPA

The Commanding General Philippine Army (CGPA) Lt. Gen. Romeo S. Brawner, Jr., welcomed the visit of the new Army Chess Grandmasters as they render a courtesy call on March 2, 2022 at the Headquarters Philippine Army, Fort Bonifacio, Metro Manila.

The Special Service Center, Installation Management Command Director Col. John Oliver Gabun and Asia’s First Grandmaster GM Eugene Torre accompanied the new Chess Grandmasters Sgt. Jayson Gonzales, PFC Janelle Mae Frayna, and PFC Antonio Chavez, Jr., as they recounted their chess journey to the CGPA.

Meanwhile, the CGPA led the awarding of the Meritorious Achievement Medal to GM Torre, Sgt. Gonzales, and PFC Frayna for their eminently meritorious and invaluable achievement as a Filipino Professional Chess Grandmaster. A Military Merit Medal was also awarded to PFC Chavez for mentoring PFC Frayna and producing fine Chess Players from the Philippine Military Academy Chess Team.

Lt. Gen. Brawner commended the soldier Chess Masters for their resolve to dominate the Chess community all while serving the Filipino people. The CGPA also expressed his appreciation to Col. Gabun for his support to the athlete soldiers of the Philippine Army and GM Torre for inspiring the new Chess Grandmasters to excel in their chosen sport.
