FORT BONIFACIO, Metro Manila - Philippine Army operating troops operating on Tuesday, March 24, 2020, successfully rescued a doctor kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) in Jolo, Sulu.
Dr. Daniel Moreno was rescued by the 11th Military Intelligence Battalion under the operational supervision of 1102nd Brigade in the hinterlands of Indanan, Sulu.
Acting on information from the Armed Forces of the Philippines and Philippine National Police intel units, said troops encountered ASG elements under the leadership of Mundi Sawadyaan at Barangay Bangalan, Indanan, Sulu.
The encounter resulted to a five-minute firefight, and due to overwhelming goverment forces in the operational area, said rebel group was forced to release Moreno before hurriedly fleeing from the encounter site.
Other operating troops of 1102Bde brought Moreno to a hospital for a medical check-up. Said doctor was reportedly abducted by four members of the terror group in his own clinic at Barangay Walled City last Feb. 4. Moreno is a prominent internist physician and the owner of the Moreno Medical Clinic and Urgent Care that caters the medical needs of the citizens of Jolo.

Through your commendable intelligence efforts, teamwork, and dedication, you are able to negate the enemy’s atrocities and save the innocent civilians from their violence. This accomplishment is a manifestation that the Philippine Army is truly on track and steadfast on its mandate of serving the people and securing the land,” said Army Commanding General Lt. Gen. Gilbert I. Gapay.
