CGPA dons new rank, meritorious achievement medal on boxing champion reservist

Commanding General, Philippine Army (CGPA) Lt. Gen. Romeo S. Brawner, Jr., conferred a Meritorious Achievement Medal and promoted to the next higher rank reservist Staff Sergeant Charly C. Suarez, World Boxing Association’s Asia Super Featherweight Champion, in an awarding ceremony on April 18, 2022 at the Headquarters Philippine Army.

SSg. Suarez is an enlisted reservist who belongs to the 1303rd Community Defense Center, NCR Regional Community Defense Group of the Reserve Command, Philippine Army. The award and the one-rank promotion are in recognition of SSg. Suarez's victory in the WBA Asia Superfeather Champion title fight at the Flash Grand Ballroom, Elorde Sports Complex, Paranaque City on March 12, 2022. SSg. Suarez, who competed in the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil and won gold medals in various boxing categories of the 2009, 2011 and 2019 editions of Southeast Asian Games, was recognized by WBA Asia as the "Boxer of the Month" in March 2022. His coach Army reservist 1st Lieutenant Delfin D. Boholst also graced the awarding ceremony.

“Imbued with outstanding self-discipline, deep sense of responsibility and dedication to duty, SSg. Suarez demonstrated exemplary commitment to the performance of his duty as a reservist and a professional boxer who not only brought great pride to the Reserve Command, Philippine Army and the Philippine Army but to the Philippines as well,” according to the citation read by Army Adjutant Col. Bernardo R. Fortez.

“Indeed you have exemplified the characteristics of a true warrior beyond the ringside with your high level of dedication and passion to serve the nation as you join the ranks of the reserve force,” Lt. Gen. Brawner said in his remarks.
