Army rowers bagged two medals in the rowing competition of the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam on May 14, 2022, ramping up the Philippine Army’s contribution to the country’s overall medal haul in the biennial regional sporting meet.
Private Chris Nievarez clinched the bronze medal in the men’s lightweight single culls event while Private First Class Amelyn Pagulayan also won the bronze medal in the women’s quadruple culls event.
It can be recalled that Pvt Nievarez earlier bagged the silver medal in the men’s lightweight double sculls event.
A total of 21 Army athletes are part of the Team Philippines that is competing in the 31st SEAG. Army athletes are participating in sporting events which include athletics, badminton, basketball, kurash, rowing, sepak takraw, volleyball, weightlifting, wrestling, and chess.
"Your outstanding tenacity and determination have brought glory not just to the Philippine Army but to our country as well. Kudos! You deserve the success you have worked so hard to achieve," Special Service Center Director Col. John Oliver F. Gabun said.
Commanding General, Philippine Army Lt. Gen. Romeo S. Brawner, Jr., also commended the Army athletes who are representing the Philippines in the 31st SEAG. The Army Chief has committed to provide Army athletes with topnotch facilities and ample support to further hone their skills and sporting prowess.
