Two Army ballers and Gilas Pilipinas Women copped the gold medal in the women's basketball tournament of the 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) in Hanoi Vietnam on May 22, 2022.
Gilas Pilipinas Women, who ruled the 2019 SEAG edition of women’s basketball, finished their title retention bid with a 4-1 win-loss tally. The 31st SEAG basketball tournament implemented a single-round format with the team that scored the best record taking home the title.
The victory of Army ballers Private First Class Janine Pontejos and Private First Class Chack Cabinbin marked the first gold medal for the Philippine Army in the biennial regional sports meet.
Philippine Army athletes have so far won two gold, five silver, and 10 bronze medals in basketball, lawn tennis, beach volleyball, chess, wrestling, sepak takraw, rowing, hurdles, and kurash events of the 31st SEAG.
“Your victory is the triumph of the entire Philippine Army and the Filipino nation. Job well done and kudos!” Lt. Gen. Romeo S. Brawner, Jr., said in his congratulatory remarks.
