Army athletes help propel Team Philippines to 31st SEAG fourth place finish

Philippine Army athletes bagged a total of 15 medals to help propel Team Philippines to fourth place in the 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) overall ranking in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Eleven Southeast Asian countries sent athletes to the biennial regional sports meet that culminated on May 23, 2022. Team Philippines clinched a total of 226 medals including 52 gold medals, 70 silver medals, and 104 bronze medals finishing behind host country Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia.

The Philippine Army contingent’s medal haul is bannered by the victory of Gilas Pilipinas Women that includes Private First Class Janine Pontejos and Private First Class Chack Cabinbin in the women’s basketball tournament. The PA contingent also won five silver medals and ten bronze medals in lawn tennis, beach volleyball, chess, wrestling, sepak takraw, rowing, hurdles, and kurash.

Winning athletes are set to receive cash incentives under the National Athletes and Coaches Incentives and Benefits Act which rewards P300,000 for each individual gold medal; P150,000 for silver; and P60,000 for bronze won by an athlete.

“I congratulate you for raising the Philippine flag to greater heights in Southeast Asia’s biggest sporting event. Your dedication, sportsmanship and the will to win even are truly inspiring. May you sustain your winning momentum in your future games and matches,” Army Commanding General Lt. Gen. Romeo S. Brawner, Jr., told the PA athletes.
