The Philippine Army Lady Battalion clinched the 2022 Womens' National Basketball League (WNBL) championship after defeating PSI Lady Air Defenders, 70-57, in Game 2 of the best-of-three finals series at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center, San Fernando City, Pampanga on June 26, 2022.
The Lady Battalion capped its "cinderella run" with the finals sweep of the PSI Lady Air Defenders, the team that won the inaugural WNBL season in 2019. It can be recalled that the Lady Battalion finished the WNBL 2022 season elimination round at fourth place with just three wins. The Lady Battalion, the fourth-seeded team, then outlasted top-seeded Taguig Lady Generals in their semi-finals do-or-die match two weeks ago.
Three military teams— PSI Lady Air Defenders, Go For Gold-Philippine Navy, and Philippine Army Lady Battalion—competed in the 2022 WNBL season, joining two other professional teams. The Army team is bannered by the stellar performance of Southeast Asian Games 2022 champions Pfc. Janine Pontejos and Pfc. Chack Cabinbin.
Army Commanding General Lt. Gen. Romeo S. Brawner, Jr., lauded the Lady Battalion for bringing home the 2022 WNBL championship trophy. The Army Chief called on the team to sustain its winning momentum to bring pride and honor not just for the organization but for the country as well.
