Army troops, hand in hand with reservists and Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) cadets and local government unit responders, continue humanitarian assistance and disaster response (HADR) efforts for families affected by Severe Tropical Storm “Florita” in Cagayan Valley and Cordillera regions on August 26, 2022.
5th Infantry Division and its line units deployed 18 HADR units composed of nearly 300 personnel to assist calamity-stricken families in Cagayan and Apayao provinces. The division likewise mobilized 40 HADR teams composed of nearly 400 personnel to help typhoon-affected families in Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Ifugao, Kalinga and Baguio City.
“Florita” made landfall on the coastal town of Maconacon, Isabela on August 23, 2022. It affected around 17,000 families (71,400 persons) who live on its path. Government responders, including Army troops and reservists, helped evacuated a total of 1,031 persons living in disaster-risk areas. Meanwhile, 4,330 persons are currently staying in 37 evacuation shelters in the Cagayan Valley and Cordillera regions.
It can be noted that the Philippine Army leadership is prioritizing the development of highly capable, well-capacitated and readily deployable reserve units that will effectively complement regular troops in times of wars, invasions, rebellions, or national emergencies.
