Philippine Army, U.S. Army Pacific gear up for bigger Salaknib

Philippine Army (PA) and U.S. Army Pacific (USARPAC) planners commenced the week-long planning conference for the 2023 iteration of Salaknib—an annual combined exercise geared at strengthening interoperability of both armies in a spectrum of military operations—at the Hotel Conrad, Pasay City on September 5, 2022.

“Training has always been a vital tool for both the Philippine Army and the United States Army Pacific to enhance defense readiness and strengthen interoperability while simultaneously bolstering bilateral relationships,” Philippine Army Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff for Education and Training (DG8), Col. Emmanuel L. Cabasan said in his welcome remarks.

PA and USARPAC will conduct Salaknib in two phases in various sites in Central and Northern Luzon next year. It can be recalled that around 2,200 Filipino and American servicemen trained side-by-side in last year’s iteration of "Salaknib" which focused on capability development of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, the PA's primary combined arms and rapid deployment unit.

Salaknib, which means shield in Ilocano, is geared at enhancing the defense readiness of Filipino and American troops by strengthening tactical interoperability.

The said annual exercise also enhances the individual skills of troops and unit capabilities in a range of military operations, in line with the command guidance of Army Commanding General Lt. Gen. Romeo S. Brawner, Jr.
