Philippine, Australian armies conclude bilateral exercise

The Philippine Army (PA) and the Australian Defence Force concluded the month-long Exercise Carabaroo that bolstered participating units' combined arms capabilities in Darwin, Australia on September 5, 2022.

More than 150 troops from the Philippine Army's 1st Brigade Combat Team, First Scout Ranger Regiment, and Special Forces Regiment (Airborne) and their Australian counterparts trained alongside U.S. Marine Corps in Exercise Carabaroo held at the Robertson Barracks and Mount Bundey Training Area in Darwin. The trilateral exercise bolstered participating troops' interoperability in a complex environment.

Exercise Carabaroo is part of the Australian Army’s 1st Brigade’s Exercise Predator's Run, a multinational training activity that simulates littoral combined arms maneuvers in a large-scale force-on-force environment. Exercise Carabaroo was held in parallel with Exercise Southern Tiger (participated by Australian and Malaysian troops) and Exchange Program Kartikaburra (participated by Australian and Indonesia troops).

Meanwhile, Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) Deputy Commander Brig. Gen. Alvin V. Flores led the PA delegation that graced the Distinguished Visitors' Day, one of Exercise Carabaroo's highlights. The TRADOC Deputy Commander, during a visit to the Mount Bundy Training Area, likewise lauded the PA contingent for ably representing not just the organization but the Philippines as well.

Army Commanding General Lt. Gen. Romeo S. Brawner, Jr.—during the courtesy call of Australian Ambassador Steven J. Robison AO back in April—reiterated PA’s commitment to sustain its comprehensive and fruitful engagement with the Australian Defence Force through the conduct of regular training exercises.

It can be noted that the Philippines and Australia have four security deals: the 1995 memorandum of understanding on cooperative defense activities, the 2012 Visiting Forces Agreement, the 2015 comprehensive partnership agreement, and the 2021 Mutual Logistics Agreement.
