Philippine Army forges deeper ties with U.S. Army Pacific, Japan Ground Self-Defense Force

The Philippine Army bolstered ties with the U.S. Army Pacific (USARPAC) and Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) during the first-ever Japan-Philippine-U.S. Trilateral Key Leaders’ Engagement at Camp Asaka, Tokyo, Japan on December 11, 2022.

The Commanding General, Philippine Army (CGPA) Lt. Gen. Romeo S. Brawner, Jr., met with JGSDF Chief of Staff Gen. Yoshida Yoshihide and USARPAC Commanding General Charles Flynn to bolster the defense cooperation and partnership among the three long-standing defense partners in the Indo-Pacific region. Philippine Marine Corps Commandant Maj. Gen. Charlton Sean Gaerlan and U.S. Marine Forces Pacific Commander Lt. Gen. William Jurney also took part in the high-level meeting.

“Our armies have strong bilateral engagements with one another so having this trilateral cooperation is truly a great opportunity for us in the Philippine Army to further advance our capabilities,” Lt. Gen. Brawner said in a post-meeting press conference.

The trilateral meeting sets the stage for regularizing high-level talks among the Philippines, Japan, and U.S. ground forces which also strengthens future multilateral cooperation frameworks.
