Sulu LGU, Military spearhead 1st Governor Tan Chess Tournament

A total of 228 chess enthusiasts joined the 1st Governor Abdusakur M Tan Chess Tournament at the Provincial Capitol Gymnasium in Barangay Bangkal, Patikul, Sulu on June 17 to 18, 2023.
According to Lt. Col. Domingo S. Robles, Commanding Officer of 35th Infantry Battalion and event organizer, "We started the Chess Tournament at the Barangay and Municipal level last year. This tournament intends to foster our relationship with the participants coming from different municipalities and to promote the chess in the province of Sulu. This will be comprised of three categories: open category, female category and kids category for ages 12 years and below."
Around 180 participants registered for the open category, 33 from female category and 15 from kids category. Winners will get trophies and cash prizes.
Meanwhile, Mr. Erwin Tan, conveyed the message of Sulu Governor Abdusakur M. Tan saying, "Ito ay panimula palang ng 1st Governor Chess Tournament. Sa tinatamasa nating katahimikan dito sa Sulu, ito ay maguumpisa hindi lang sa chess kundi sa lahat ng sports upang maipakita din natin sa ibang probinsya at karatig na lugar. Nagpapasalamat kami sa mga lumahok, nandito kayo upang ipakita ang dedikasyon ng isang Bangsa Sug."
In his message, Maj. Gen. Ignatius N. Patrimonio, Commander of the 11th Infantry "Alakdan" Division said, “Chess is a game of skill, strategy and creativity. It challenges our mind, sharpens our thinking, and enriches our lives. Chess is also a game of respect, sportsmanship and friendship. It teaches us to be humble in victory and gracious in defeat.”
"With the relative peace that we are now enjoying in the province, we were able to hold this chess tournament and other recreational activities. Let us continue to work hand in hand to sustain the peace here in Sulu," Maj. Gen. Patrimonio concluded.
