Army commemorates historic retaking of Fort Bonifacio

The Philippine Army commemorated the 78th anniversary of the Retaking of Fort Andres Bonifacio (formerly Fort William McKinley) with the unveiling of the new Larangang Hunters-ROTC Monument at Fort Bonifacio, Metro Manila on February 16, 2023.

The commemoration and unveiling ceremony honored the heroism, sacrifice, and achievements of Filipino and allied veterans who played a key role in the retaking of Fort McKinley during World War II. The said event marked an important milestone in Philippine military history.

Guest of honor and speaker, Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) Administrator, USec. Reynaldo B. Mapagu of the Department of National Defense, together with military host Army Vice Commander Brig. Gen. Steve D. Crespillo led the wreath-laying ceremony at the new monument which depicts a Hunters-ROTC rifleman in a firing stance.

Brig. Gen. Crespillo, in his remarks on behalf of Army Commanding General Lt. Gen. Romeo S. Brawner, Jr., paid tribute to Hunters-ROTC cadet soldiers who overcame World War II aggressors’ superiority in arms and numbers with their unconventional tactics. ”As we commemorate one of the most significant events in our history which happened here at the now Headquarters of the Philippine Army, we honor their sacrifice and remember their bravery,” the Army Vice Commander remarked.
