Jailed NPA rebel awaiting release rearrested on new murder charges

In a surprising turn of events, a New People's Army member was re-arrested by the combined forces of the 59th Infantry "Protector" Battalion and the Batangas Provincial Police Office following the issuance of a new warrant of arrest for murder in Batangas City on January 25, 2024.

Soldiers and police served a Warrant of Arrest for Murder to Karla Mae Monge, known by the alias Ching, an intelligence and medical officer of Sinag 2 from the Southern Tagalog Regional Party Committee.

Monge is currently detained at the Provincial Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in Batangas City, after she was initially apprehended on November 20, 2023, by a Warrant of Arrest issued under the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020 on January 12, 2023. But a court order from the Regional Trial Court Fourth Judicial Region Branch 7 quashed the earlier warrant and directed her immediate release from the Batangas Provincial Jail.

However, the new arrest warrant was served by the troops before her release and she will continue to be detained at the jail facility for her new murder charges.

In a statement, the 2nd Infantry “Jungle Fighter” Division Commander Maj. Gen. Roberto S. Capulong said that the re-arrest of Karla Mae Monge sends a strong message that those involved in unlawful activities will be held accountable for their actions.

He also reiterated that the military and law enforcement agencies are committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the safety and security of our communities.
